Zims to benefit in SA

JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of Zimbabweans living here are set to benefit from a new programme to support migrants in the city's bid to eradicate xenophobia and make foreign nationals productive.
Addressing Refugee Working Group at Wits University last week, City of Johannesburg official Mashudu Fun

zai said, “We are doing feasibility studies on how we can assist refugees in the city with accommodation, projects and other social services. The Mayor would like to see the integration of refugee and asylum seekers to contribute effectively to the growth of the city.”
Funzai added that they were looking into complaints where Metro Police are harassing refugees and asylum seekers in the city. There have been reports that the city police are demanding bribes from migrants to avoid deportation.
The Mayor is going to open a desk in his office to deal with migrants in the city and the council has called upon refugee organizations to come up with sustainable projects to assist migrants.
It is estimated that there are over five millions foreign nationals in Gauteng province, more than one million of them Zimbabweans. – Zakeus Chibaya
