United open gap at top

LONDON – Manchester United have emerged as Premiership title favourites after winning their local derby 3-1 at home to Manchester City, while champions Chelsea lost ground after being held 1-1 at home by Arsenal, Ghana’s Michael Essien equalising late on for Chelsea.

Midfieldler Matthew Taylor scored with an amazing 45-yard volley–a strong contender for goal-of-the-season– as Portsmouth won 2-0 at home to Everton to go third in the table. Kanu rattled in Portsmouth‘s second goal on a day when two fellow-Nigeria strikers were also on target. Obafemi Martins scored twice in Newcastle‘s 3-1 win at Blackburn and Yakubu grabbed Middlesbrough‘s equaliser in a 1-1 home draw with Wigan.
