Ncube obstacle to unity – MDC

HARARE - Chances of leaders of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) factions forging unity of the two sides have become highly doubtful as it emerged that Morgan Tsvangirai has been "instructed" by his ranks to 'forget about re-unification with the other faction under its current lead

ership and structure’.
Highly-placed sources within the Tsvangirai camp revealed to The Zimbabwean details of recent deliberations and said tension was high over the matter.
They said the embattled former trade union leader put the matter to vote at one leadership meeting and the outcome overwhelmingly resisted unity with the Mutambara faction.
The main bone of contention is that Tsvangirai’s followers will not accept former secretary general, Welshman Ncube, who led the break away group. Ncube, who holds the same position in the Mutambara camp, has been branded a “Zanu (PF) activist” by most of the influential people in the Tsvangirai camp.
The source said they might settle for a deal that brings in Mutambara together with the other less-disliked leaders of his faction such as Vice President Gibson Sibanda, but without Ncube.
“Everyone at Harvest House (MDC headquarters) has scars from Welshman and people will not easily forget,” he said.
Another source privy to the goings-on within Tsvangirai’s camp claimed Mutambara had been made aware of the possibility. “Arthur has high respect for Morgan and knows fully well that his time will come after Tsvangirai. He (Mutambara) has been made to clearly understand that the poisoned part of his team is Welshman and that he could be welcome without the bad elements led by Ncube.”
Spokesman of the Tsvangirai wing, Nelson Chamisa declined to be drawn into confirming the meetings. “But we have reiterated that we are committed to the unity of all democratic forces in fighting one enemy, which is Zanu (PF),” he said. “I don’t understand this obsession with an individual (Mutambara). Why are you not talking about, for example, Dr John Makumbe or Wellington Chibhebhe?”
