UN to run troubled Zim refugee school?

JOHANNESBURG - The United Nations is reported to have taken over the running of a refugee school founded by Zimbabwean exiles here. Izenzo Kungemazwi Refugee School was ordered closed in October last year by officials of the SA Home Affairs department following allegations of corruption and embezzle

ment of funds by some board members.
One of the former teachers at the school who is accused of leaking information to donors has gone into hiding in Johannesburg. He said his life was in danger after he decided to expose the people who stole the school funds for personal use.
“As I speak to you now, I am in hiding. I am receiving death threats and strange SMS’s from anonymous people,” he told The Zimbabwean. He said those accused of embezzling the funds were under police investigation and could face arrest soon.
“I have reported the matter to the police but they have done nothing to protect me,” he added.
Efforts to locate the former director of the school, Judith Sidambe, proved fruitless as her mobile phone went unanswered.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Zimbabwean teachers are flocking to South Africa to look for jobs after the Minister of Education here hinted that the government could employ teachers from neighbouring countries to teach maths and science.
South Africa produces 20 000 teachers every year but there are not enough science and maths teachers to fill the void left by those leaving for European countries.
The SA Democratic Teachers Union has opposed the recruitment of Zimbabwean teachers, saying it should not be done at the expense of the education in another SADC member state. – From Thabo Kunene
