Politburo votes to fire Tekere (08-02-07)

HARARE - The Zanu (PF) Politburo, has unanimously resolved to fire a key veteran nationalist, former secretary-general Edgar Tekere, who has just published a scathing autobiography saying that President Robert Mugabe was a reluctant recruit in the liberation war.
The politburo gave in to pressure

from the youth and women’s leagues to fire the firebrand nationalist on allegations of gross indiscipline by denigrating the party leadership.
The Politburo has referred this decision to the ruling party’s presidium, which comprises President Robert Mugabe, his two secretaries Joice Mujuru and Joseph Msika and chairman John Nkomo, for endorsement. Insiders say Tekere’s dismissal was “as good as done”.
Tekere last month released a highly controversial autobiography titled ‘A Lifetime of Struggle’, in which he claimed Mugabe was now a liability to Zimbabwe.
Zanu (PF) spokesman Nathan Shamuyarira said it was the general feeling among Politburo members that Tekere, who has been increasingly critical of Mugabe in the last few years, should not have been readmitted to the party last year when party members knew he was writing a book in which Mugabe featured. – Staff reporter
