Residents threaten Chombo-(15-02-07)

HARARE - More than 1,000 Mbare residents have given Local Government and Urban Development minister Ignatius Chombo two weeks to improve the collapsing service delivery in the oldest ghetto in the capital or face a crippling civil disobedience campaign by angry residents.
At a meeting held Runyar

aro House at the St Michaels’ Anglican Church in Mbare last week, residents complained bitterly about the lack of representation since the arbitrary and illegal sacking of elected Harare executive mayor Engineer Elias Mudzuri and his administration.
The meeting, organized by the Combined Harare Residents Association, CHRA, heard a flurry of complaints from residents, which included burst sewer pipes which are not being attended to in time by the municipality, the sprouting of formal and informal dumping sites, poor roads and the ever increasing charges in rates. Residents said the after-effects of the army-led Operation Murambatsvina and the deepening economic crisis were compounding their problems.
Residents also voiced concern on the takeover of water administration by ZINWA and the inconsistent water billing by the quasi-government body.
In a petition to Chombo, and also copied to all government ministries, ZINWA, the Harare Commission, police, civic society organizations, SADC and the African Union; residents gave the minister two weeks to respond to their concerns or face “sustained peaceful marches.” – Staff Reporter
