National service for SA youth

THE South African government has recruited over 30 000 youths to undergo the National Youth Service in a move aimed at boosting the country's economy.
However, the implementation of the Service will be greatly different from that of Zimbabwe, whose government uses youths as a militia to att

ack those critical about Mugabe’s misrule.
The South African Communist Party (SACP)’s Young Communist League (YCL) Secretary-General, Buti Manamela, told CAJ News in an interview last week that he welcomed the government’s move.
“The National Youth Service will play a key role in providing the youth with skills and will also assist them in meeting the needs of our people broadly.
“The programme will be successful if the government does not reduce it into a public relations exercise or as a form of patronage in buying youth loyalty so that particular political agendas is being settled,” said Manamela.
More than 5 000 South African youths have been earmarked for employment before the end of April after the youth service programme. – CAJ News
