Corrupt cops make life hell in Jozi (28-06-07)

John Ndlovu (31) stays in Hillbrow. On Friday last week he was caught in a police raid at a flat along Goldich.

His crime - living in South Africa without permit papers. He was supposed to be taken to number 4, which is Hillbrow Police Station.

Instead, the four arrestin

g police officers took him and other four others on an intimidating “joyride”.

After 20 minutes, the five were taken back to the flat. A deal had been struck. Three of the illegal immigrants paid R200 for their freedom.

Ndlovu and his friend gave away a television set and a DVD player since he did not have the hard cash on him which the police demanded.

“It’s better I give away a television set than to have my time wasted at Lindela holding centre,” said Ndlovu.

Another illegal immigrant, Jabulani Mpofu, who hails from Tsholotsho in said Zimbabweans in Hillbrow were losing property worth millions of rands to South African Police Service (SAPS) officers in exchange of freedom – rather than being deported to face poverty back home.

“Brother, it is difficult to complain anywhere. In South Africa money can buy your freedom even if you kill or rob the bank,” said Mandla Mbano, who survives through informal trading.

Efforts to get comment from the SAPS were fruitless as nobody at Hillbrow was willing to talk to CAJ News about the increasing police corruption. – CAJ News
