Matema and Bhasera for big debut (20-07-07)

ZIMBABWE soccer players Ralph Matema and Onesimo Bhasera will make their debut in the big Vodacom Challenge starting on Saturday when their respective South African teams, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs take on English side Tottenham Hotspurs.

ek and Matema, formerly of Premier Soccer League champions Highlanders, has already hit the nets in the 22 draw against Mvela Golden League side Witbank Spurs.
Bhasera, from relegated Maritzburg United, played in a losing cause against Black Leopards in the Limpopo Soccer Challenge last Sunday.
The two will not be the only Zimbabweans in the competition Chiefs also have international midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha while referee Tendai Bwanya has been seconded to the competition. Last year, the challenge featured English champions Manchester United and Thabani Mkantjo attended.
The two players could not have arrived at their new clubs in a better time than this as they have been given the chance to show what they are made of.
Matema scored 11 goals in 13 matches before his departure and arrived with a big reputation and becomes the third player after Innocent Chikoya and Edelbert Dinha to don the famous black and white Bucaneers’ jersey.
Left wingback Bhasera, who plays for the senior national team, must have caught the eye of new coach Muhsin Ertugral.
Spurs warmed up for their opening challenge match against Chiefs on Saturday, after Robbie Keane scored in the 10 win over Eircom league side St Patrick’s 10 in Dublin.
Keane has mixed memories of his previous trip to South Africa in the colours of Spurs in 2003, having been a part of the team that lost 21 to Orlando Pirates in Durban and having got one of the goals that saw the London side beat Kaizer Chiefs 20 in Cape Town three days later.
Defender Anthony Gardner and Keane are the only two players in the Spurs travelling party that toured South Africa four years ago.
Keane joins top notch striker Dimitar Berbatov, Jermaine Defoe and new signing Darren Bent, as the formidable strike force that is due in South Africa today.
