Gono, Nyoni in battle for power

HARARE
Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono has clashed with Small to Medium Scale Enterprises (SME) minister Sthembiso Nyoni with allegations flying thick and fast that the central bank chief was usurping the powers vested in the minister.
Nyoni was reportedly apoplectic with fury after Gono de

ployed members of his Exchange Control staff to the rural areas last week Monday for an SME awareness programme where he was promising rural folk funding to start income generating projects. Nyoni was not consulted about the operation.
The programme was scheduled to last for seven days. But three days into the programme, all deployed staff was recalled back to the RBZ after Gono was summoned by President Robert Mugabe to State House to explain what he was doing.
This was after Nyoni had approached Mugabe complaining that Gono was contemptuously encroaching into her area. Mugabe is well known for lending a sympathetic ear to Nyoni.
There were also concerns about the object of the whole operation, amid reports Nyoni told Mugabe Gono was using the programme to campaign for himself in the rural areas ahead of next year’s presidential polls. Gono has long been accused of harbouring presidential ambitions, an allegation he has staunchly rejected.
This is not the first time Gono has clashed with ministers in Mugabe’s government. Earlier this year, he clashed with sacked Finance minister Herbert Murerwa over his move to dabble in “quasi fiscal activities,” or issues that fall under the jurisdiction of the Finance minister. Murerwa was eventually fired by Mugabe through a Cabinet reshuffle.
Murerwa argued that Gono, as central bank governor, was supposed to confine himself exclusively to monetary issues, not fiscal issues. – Chief reporter
