SAWIMA calls for more sanctions

A leading South African

civil society organisation, Southern Africa Women Institute on Migration Affairs (SAWIMA) has urged SA President Thabo Mbeki to impose travel sanctions to Zimbabwean government elite.
SAWIMA handed over a petition to the Provincial Government offices in Johannesburg last week accompanied by a crowd of about 300 Zimbabweans chanting anti-Mugabe slogans.
“We are asking president Mbeki to consider stopping Zimbabwean government officials from sending their children to SA universities as poor citizens are also isolated from such. We also ask the government to relax visa requirements fees,” said Joyce Dube, director of SAWIMA.
The demonstration was organized by SAWIMA, Creative Writers and Arts Workshop, Methodist Church and Solidarity Peace Trust.
A few days earlier Zimbabwe’s Revolutionary Youth Movement held a demonstration in Johannesburg asking University of Witwatersrand and other institutions to expel students related to Mugabe’s ruling elite.
Plans by the US and the European Union plans are underway to expel such students.– Trust Matsilele
