UK students condemn Zim govt

LONDON
The National Union of Students (NUS) in the UK has condemned the Zimbabwean government and University of Zimbabwe officials for stifling students' rights.
The students' union said it was in solidarity with the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) in their on-going struggles fo

r a democratic education system.
“NUS unequivocally and whole heartedly stands in firm solidarity with ZINASU in their ongoing struggles for a democratic education system – free from intimidation and violence, free from illegal evictions and expulsions, free from bullying from Vice Chancellor (Levy) Nyagura and the government, and free from hikes in tuition fees for no reason and without warning,” NUS national president, Gemma Tumelty said.
The UZ has ignored a High Court order allowing all students back into residence after they were recently suspended for demonstrating.
“NUS call on Zimbabwean officials to end the illegal torture, abuse and intimidation of students and student leaders, and to allow students to return to their education and accommodation immediately and without exception,” added NUS.
NUS will hold a march in solidarity with the oppressed students in Zimbabwe and the stop and condemn apartheid, xenophobic on Zimbabweans in South Africa in London on Friday. – Staff reporter
