WALTER Smith's rampant Rangers routed table-topping Celtic 3-0 in front of a 50,428 Ibrox crowd and now trail their Glasgow rivals only on goal-difference in the Scottish Premier. Nacho Novo scored twice.

In England, the big Merseyside derby ended in drama and controversy as two Dirk Kuyt penalties, the second in the 90th minute, earned Liverpool a 2-1 win at Everton who finished with nine men. But Kuyt, the Dutch striker, was lucky not to have been red-carded earlier, his team-mate Steven Gerrard was accused of getting an opponent dismissed and Everton were denied a blatant penalty in the dying seconds.
Aston Villa also had two players sent off as Manchester United, boosted by a Wayne Rooney double, came from behind for a 4-1 win at Villa Park.
Arsenal, the leaders, won again, as did Manchester City, Blackburn and Portsmouth for whom Zimbabwe’s in-form Benjani Mwaruwari bagged his seventh goal of the campaign in a 2-0 scoreline at Wigan. Bolton are rock bottom and without a manager after Sammy Lee became the 10th to lose his job in England this season.
Watford are six points clear at the top of the Championship. Marlon King, who missed virtually all last season through injury, clinched a 1-0 home win over Hull.
