Coup case – remanded again

HARARE - A Zimbabwean court on Monday further remanded in custody six men facing charges of plotting to stage a coup and topple Robert Mugabe. The six men were told to come back to court on October 29.

Defence lawyer Charles Warara told the court that he has filing an application for refusal of further remand at the next court sitting because his clients had languished in custody since June.

The six alleged coup plotters, Albert Matapo, 40, a former senior army officer; Shingirai Mutemachani, 20, a private in the army; Nyasha Zivuku; Oncemore Mudzurahowa, 41; Emmanuel Marara, 40; and Patson Mapfure, 46, are accused of plotting to recruit members of the armed forces to stage a coup against Mugabe.

After overthrowing Mugabe, the six allegedly planned to invite Rural Housing Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa to take over as president while lead coup plotter Matapo would declare himself prime minister, according to the State case.

Mnangagwa has dismissed his involvement in the coup plot as nonsense.

The six men also deny the charges and say they were meeting to form a new political party when the police stormed their meeting in a Harare suburb. – Chief Reporter
