Mugabe appeals for unity of purpose with MDC

HARARE:
EMBATTLED President Robert Mugabe on Monday (today) urged the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) to forge ahead with the prospects of  unity of purpose in order to turnaround the country's declining agricultural sector.

Mugabe made the call at the commissioning of some farming implements in Harare in which the equipment would be distributed to the new black farmers, whose majority are being accused of occupying huge chunks of aluvial soils, but without fully utlising the land since the inception of the widely condemned commercial farms invasions.

The 83 year old frailed leader insisted that only through working together between Zanu PF and MDC would end the economic crisis the country is experiencing today.

“Let’s work together, all of us.  We all need food whether we belong to Zanu PF or MDC. We eat the same food let’s unite for one goal. When these tractors are distributed we won’t consider whether one is a member of Zanu PF or MDC,” said Mugabe to the appluase of both Zanu PF and MDC activists at the ceremony.

The occasion, which was attended by some notable MDC legislators was hailed as another milestone towards ending the seven years of both socio-political and economic crisis Zimbabwe has gone through.

Mugabe said hunger knew no boundaries as both Zanu PF and MDC followers badly needed food for their their survival as the country’s Grain Marketing Board (GMD) silos have run dry.

Mugabe’s call for unity of purpose barely comes two weeks after the ruling Zanu PF and MDC made some progressive discusions in Kariba where the two rivals parties are seeking to end the year jostling without coming forward with practical solutions to the socio-economic problems.

The on-going high level talks between Zanu PF and the two factions of the MDC are being credited to South African President, President Thabo Mbeki, for mediating without taking sides.

President Mbeki was tasked by the South African Development Community (SADC) regional heads of state to mediating in the Zimbabwean’s seven year political stalemate following election rigging by Mugabe in 2000 controversial parliamentary elections as well as the 2002 presidential elections.

As a result of election rigging, commercial farm invasions, breaking down of the rule of law and company seizures saw the country experience acute food shortages, foreign currency scarcity, fuel shortage, electricity power uttages, unemployment rate hovering above 85 percent while the hyperinflation hit the world mark record of above 7 000 percent.

Due to perennial food shortages caused by Zanu PF’s farm invasions and lawlessness in the countryside, Zimbabwe’s life expectancy has sharply gone down owing to food shortages and economic meltdown- CAJ News.
