600 evicted in Jozi crackdown

JOHANNESBURG - More than 600 Zimbabweans were left homeless at the weekend, with their belongings scattered over the streets of inner-city Jozi following a crackdown on "unfit" buildings.

Some 25 000 people face an uncertain future as the City fathers continue with plans to evict people from dilapidated buildings. Zimbabweans residing in flat along Mooi and Bree streets said they were forced to evacuate without proper notification.

They claim they were shocked when the Red Ants- “a riot responsible in forcibly evicting people” accompanied by police arrived in the early hours of the morning and ordered them to vacate the buildings.

“We have been staying here for the past three years and now they tell us to leave without any notice. Now we don’t know where we are going to stay and as our property are just scattered all over the streets exposed to thieves,” said Khululeko Moyo.

He said very few Zimbabweans knew their rights as residents or who to contact when faced with this form of human rights violation. A member of the company that claims to have bought the building refused to comment and referred The Zimbabwean to his lawyers who also declined to give a comment on the issue.

Residents claim to have lost belongs as a result of the eviction and that they were verbally abused by members of the notorious Red Ants. The local government-ordered evictions are aimed at clearing an estimated 235 bad buildings viewed as hotbeds of crime. – Own correspondent
