Two injury-time goals earned Everton a 3-1 home win over Birmingham, while Zimbabwean Benjani Mwaruwari, eight-goal top-scorer in the Premiership, curled in the second of Portsmouth’s three goals in the first 11 minutes in a 4-1 victory at Newcastle.
In the Championship, top-of-the-table Watford crashed 3-0 at home to West Bromwich. Leeds’ 3-1 defeat away to League One leaders Carlisle ended their unbeaten record and Milton Keynes, top of League Two, drew 1-1 at Wycombe despite being down to nine men for the last 32 minutes.
 Hearts, having just knocked Celtic out of the Scottish CIS Cup, drew 1-1 in the Premier League Edinburgh derby at Hibernian. Celtic won 2-1 away to Kilmarnock and Rangers were 2-0 home winners over Inverness.
* A mix-up in the draw for the semi-finals of the CIS Cup meant it was drawn again. Rangers will play Hearts, Aberdeen face Dundee United.
 * Paul Scholes, the Manchester United and ex-England midfielder, will be sidelined for three months with a knee injury.
 * John Bostock has become the youngest player ever to make his Crystal Palace debut. The highly-rated midfielder came off the subs’ bench at the age of 15 years and 287 days.
