JOHANNESBURG

JOHANNESBURG:
SOUTH Africa finance minister, Trevor Manuel, has hailed Zimbabweans
as highly skilled professionals who are steering the South African
economy, which called for a rational approach when tackling the issue
of people coming in to South Africa from neighbouring countries.

He was speaking at the weekend during the Financial Mail Medium-Term

Budget briefing titled, “The Human Spirit is Quite Extraordinary.

“There is all this talk of Zimbabweans coming in, but if you meet many

of them you will meet a lot of professionals and skilled people,”

media quoted Manuel as saying.

He said that the question of border protection was a very difficult

one but that a less agitated approach was needed and a skills balance

was necessary. In immigration policy.

“Our experience is now becoming a global experience. It is not an easy

issue, but we need a less hysterical discourse about the issue,”

Manuel concluded.

South Africa is home to millions of Zimbabweans who have either fled

the economic recession or political crisis.

A significant number of these are highly skilled professional who have

left in search for greener pastures in Zimbabwe’s southern neighbour.

However, as the country proves not to be as greener as most

Zimbabweans greener pastures had initially anticipated, many

professionals are employed in menial industries. – Own correspondent
