Lawyer dies in car crash

HARARE - Prominent human rights lawyer, press freedom activist and deputy secretary of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, Lawrence Chibwe, died in a car accident on Saturday night on his way home after a lawyers' cocktail at a city hotel.

Chibwe, 36, failed to negotiate a curve at the Avondale Shopping Centre, exited the travel lane and struck a guardrail, causing the vehicle to overturn twice before striking a tower light. He died on the spot.

Chibwe played a prominent role in defence of Zimbabwe’s banned leading daily newspaper, the Daily News. He also represented several journalists who often found themselves in problems with the law.

“We have lost a comrade, a colleague, friend and brother who radiated warmth and camaraderie to those who knew and associated with him,” said a statement from ZLHR.

Chibwe is survived by his wife Ruth and three children. A family spokesperson said Chibwe’s burial would take place in his rural home in Zaka. – Chief reporter
