According to Nyasa Times drivers working for local transport companies have confided that on several occasions they have delivered fuel, especially diesel, to the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (NOCZIM).
Nyasa Times says that a top government official, who wished to remain anonymous, has confirmed this is taking place.
The official said: “It is not a deal as such but rather just a brotherly gesture between Presidents Mutharika and Mugabe – as you know the two are good friends.”
The deal is expected to partially alleviate Zimbabwe’s acute oil shortages, which for some years have been precipitated by economic turmoil in the country.
Nyasa Times says that Malawians are concerned this deal with Zimbabwe may cause fuel scarcity in Malawi. Press reports allege that southern Malawi is facing diesel shortages. Fuel prices have risen by 20 percent in Malawi and subsequent increases in minibus fares.
This is not the first time that Malawi has helped Zimbabwe. Earlier this year Malawi sent tonnes of maize to Zimbabwe even though payment so far has not yet been received. When this happened, a heated debate broke out in Malawi’s Parliament where members of the opposition accused the Mutharika administration of bartering maize with sugar.
The Zimbabwe High Commissioner to Malawi, Thandi Dumbutshena was not available for comment but is on record as calling for positive reporting about the issues concerning Zimbabwe’s current situation.
