Moyo wins big purse


JOHANNESBURG - Zimbabwe female long-distance runner, Samukeliso Moyo, came second in the lucrative R750,000 (about £55,000) Nedbank Soweto Marathon contested last week.

Moyo, who is now attached with Mr Price Athletics Club, narrowly lost to Mamorallo Tjoka of Lesotho, who won with a time of 2hrs 47mins 57sec whilst the Zimbabwean international cane second in 2hrs 49mins 50sec.

The Nedbank Soweto Marathon event attracted athletes from as far as Europe, Asia and South Africa.

With Zimbabwe making final touches to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Moyo is tipped to be one of the country’s representative in this category of the 30-kilometre road race.

In the men’s category, there was no success for the Zimbabwean athletes as they were out of top five with Teboho Sello of Lesotho coming first in 2 hrs, 18 mins, 51 secs.

Sello walked away with an R100,000 first prize with Samukeliso Moyo of Zimbabwe getting an undisclosed amount (estimated around R50 000).

More than 1200 athletes took part at the Nedbank Soweto Marathon, that took place last week. – Agency
