Museveni under pressure to ask Mugabe to restore rule of law

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and chairman of the 52-nation Commonwealth club is under pressure from Britain to convince Zimbabwe's leader, Robert Mugabe to restore democracy and the rule of law, according to local media reports in Kampala.

During the meeting between British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Museveni, the Ugandan President promised to use his new office to rein in Mugabe.

“The President said that in his capacity he can influence President Mugabe because previously he had no capacity to involve himself in Zimbabwean politics,” the President’s Press Secretary, Tamale Mirundi, told journalists yesterday.

Some media reports claim Museveni also warned the British Prime Minister that Mugabe was not a man who easily accepted orders.

Brown is reported to have said: “If Mr Mugabe can accept to restor order in Zimbabwe, Britain was willing to participate in the rehabiliation of the country’s economy whose inflation rate has shot up to over 15000 percent.”
