Velaphi Ndlovu, who is a Member of Parliament and the opposition IFP’s spokesperson on Safety and Security, said the influx of Zimbabweans into South Africa should not be allowed to continue.
“South Africa is not a welfare organization and as a result should not give any food, shelter or any form of assistance to Zimbabweans,” he said addreesing policy meeting in Johannesburg recently.
Millions of Zimbabweans have fled their country into neighbouring countries and abroad but mainly to South Africa as they flee the deepening economic and political situation in Zimbabwe.
A great number of them are women with young children who cannot support themselves.
Most of the migrants are in need of food, shelter and clothing.
As a result countries such as South Africa have mooted plans to build temporary shelter for Zimbabweans in areas such as Musina where there is a huge influx of Zimbabweans coming in into South Africa.
However, Ndlovu castigated this move saying it would be costly to the country.
“Who is going to feed these people? We can’t burden the taxpayer. We have our own problems and millions of South Africans are suffering but no-one is helping them and so why should the South African government help Zimbabweans,” he said.
