We’ll be tough on Mugabe – EU leaders

JOHANNESBURG - The European Union has agreed to have the human rights situation in Zimbabwe put on the agenda for its Portuguese summit and promised to send a "clear and tough" message to President Robert Mugabe.

An EU official said Britain, Sweden and the Netherlands had pushed for “a real discussion on human rights and governance in Zimbabwe” during the summit.

EU president, Portugal, will host the first summit of EU and African leaders in seven years but British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said neither he nor any senior member of the British government will attend alongside Mugabe.

The embattled Mugabe appeared to have scored a major diplomatic coup after Portugal announced in late October it would invite all African Union leaders to a summit of European and African countries in December. -ZimOnline
