JOHANNESBURG - A massive recruitment drive by the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) South African office has seen thousands of Zimbabweans joining its ranks.

Tapera Kapuya, NCA coordinator for SA, said the figures were “very encouraging and showed that although Zimbabweans had fled their country in large numbers, they would continue fighting for a people-driven constitution”.
“The public debates have been a success. Strong debate over controversial bills such as the 18th Amendment Act have been fully scrutinized by the members,” an NCA field officer said.
“We are happy to note that South African organizations like the Action for Conflict Transformation, Communist Youth League, Zimbabwe Solidarity Forum and Peace, Development Platform and the labour organization COSATU have thrown their weight behind us,” said Kapuya.
Unlike in Zimbabwe where demonstrations are met with severe beatings and arrests by police, the demonstrations in South Africa have the full blessing of the police who even control traffic during the demonstrations. – Trust Matsilele
