MDC National Executive outlines deliverables on the ongoing SADC dialogue

mdc The MDC National Executive comprising of 46 executive members held an extra ordinary meeting today at Harvest House Harare and deliberated extensively on the ongoing SADC dialogue.

The National Executive was briefed on the ongoing SADC dialogue and noted that ZANU (PF) were insincere in the negotiations.

Concerns noted:

·        The executive noted with grave concern the deterioration of both the economic and humanitarian situation in the country in particular shortage of basic commodities, cash shortages and general erosion of incomes.

·         The Executive expressed concern on the prevailing political situation in the country where, food is being  used as a political weapon,

·         Violence is continuing unabated against democratic forces in the country.

·          ZANU (PF) continues to institute a media blackout on the opposition with journalistic freedoms curtailed.  

·        The Executive expressed concern over the unilateral decisions by ZANU (PF) with regards to elections. 

The National Executive resolved that while acknowledging the ongoing deliberations in Pretoria, the MDC demands that ZANU ( PF) deliver on the following tangible imperatives and deliverables pending the meeting of the National Council of the party on the   16th of December 2007 to review the whole progress of the dialogue :

1.       A new Constitution must be introduced prior to the elections as agreed.

2.       The reconstitution of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) according to what was agreed on the Amendment number 18 in particular ;

a. A new voter’s role as a prerequisite for a free and fair elections.

b. The delimitation of constituencies must be done according to what was agreed in the ongoing dialogue.

3.       ZANU (PF) must cease all acts of hostility, violence and publicly denounce    violence.

4.       The restoration of daily independent papers and freedom of journalists to operate.

5.       Implementation of agreed principles with regards to POSA, AIPPA, the Broadcasting Act and Electoral Laws.

6.       The international community must be allowed to operate unimpeded in monitoring of elections.

7.       All Zimbabweans including those in the Diaspora must be allowed to exercise their democratic right to vote in the upcoming elections.

·        The National Executive resolved that neither an agreement nor a free and fair election would be possible unless there is delivery on the tangibles listed above.

·        The Executive also urged the party leadership to remain engaged and continue consulting with civic partners in the quest for national solution to the current crisis.
