Political analysts and civil society leaders from Zimbabwe in South Africa are confident that, if he becomes president, Zuma might change the stance of SA on Zimbabwe and shun Mbeki’s failed quiet diplomacy.
“Zuma has enjoyed a huge support from COSATU, the Young Communist League and the SA Communist party – who have different views about the Mugabe style of leadership. So if he gets into power his policy might be influenced by these groups,” commented one analyst.
South Africa’s ruling African National Congress is facing strong divisions which might see an end to Mbeki’s decade long legacy in the helm ending with a humiliating defeat which eventually might deliver a new approach by the regional economic powerhouse to Zimbabwe. – Trust Matsilele
