Police investigate ZRP gun smuggling

THE South African Police Services (SAPS) has assembled a team of security specialists to investigate smuggling of suspected Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) firearms into the country.

The move comes after 50 CZ 75 9mm weapons were discovered at OR Tambo International Airport last week. The weapons were valued at R175 000.

According to police spokesperson Dennis Adriao, the arms cache was found on an unnamed international passenger airliner that had flown from Zimbabwe. Investigations are underway.

The handguns were found in the cargo hold of a plane, packed in a wooden padlocked box, which had “Zimbabwe contingent” written on top of it. Most of the weapons, which appeared second hand, had ZRP stamped on them with an additional serial number. The firearms were made in the Czech Republic, and still had their original serial numbers.
