Zuma to be charged with corruption – NPA

There is enough evidence to prosecute Jacob Zuma, the newly elected leader of the African National Congress in South Africa, says the state's National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

A decision to bring charges against Zuma are imminent and the NPA has expressed it confidence it can now proceed with charging Zuma for corruption in a case that has gripped the country over South Africa’s arms deal involving involving a number of foreign arms manufacturers.

Zuma’s supporters, particularly Cosatu, is likely to protest against these charges, which it regards as a political conspiracy trumped up against Zuma to discredit him and prevent him from taking hold of the reigns of power from his arch-rival President Thabo Mbeki.

This latest development is likely to cause further uncertainty in South Africa’s fledgling democracy and lead to a polarisation of power within the ANC.
