ITF snubs Harare

HARARE - Effort by cash-strapped Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) to have the International Tennis Federation (ITF) award the southern African nation the right to host the 2008 Europe/Africa Zone Group III relegation ties hit a snag last week when Harare was snubbed.

The Zimbabwe tennis controlling body made spirited bid in their attempt to have the April 2008 Euro-Afro Group III moved to Harare to cut travel costs, but the ITF awarded the joint bid to Bulgaria and Armenia.

Zimbabwe, the once African continent’s number one tennis nation will battle it out with the likes of lightweights Botswana, Bulgaria, Cote D’Ivoire, Madagascar, Montenegro, Nigeria and Turkey respectively. – Own correspondent
