Zanu PF to split?

Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu PF is facing a damaging split after one of its leading figures announced today that he will challenge veteran President Robert Mugabe in next month's crucial elections, reports The Nation, Nairobi.

Former Southern African Development (SADC) executive secretary, Simba Makoni who is also a member of the Zanu PF top decision making body told journalists that he will stand in the presidential poll as an independent candidate.

There is strong speculation that his candidature is sponsored by a faction of the ruling party, which was not happy with a decision of the Zanu PF special congress last year to endorse Mr Mugabe as the presidential candidate.

Following very extensive and intensive consultations with party members and activists countrywide and also with others outside the party I have accepted the call and hereby advise the people of Zimbabwe that I offer myself as candidate for the office of president, Dr Makoni said.

The announcement coming a few days after factions of the country’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) failed to agree on a united front against the ruling party, has reignited interest in the forthcoming polls. Zimbabweans vote in combined presidential, legislative and local government elections on March 29 and nomination courts sit on Friday to accept candidates for the polls.
