In a statement, spokesperson for the Mashonaland Swimming Board, Glen Byrom said Zimbabwe’s 16-strong team finished in 13th place among more than 70 participating clubs and bring home 13 medals.
He said those who won include pirates club and St George’s schoolboy Matthew Lawson who struck gold in the gala’s very first event last Tuesday by winning the boys’ 14-year-olds 400 metres freestyle whilst his brother James took the 13-year-olds 200 metres breaststroke in the fine time of two minutes, 40,11 sec, also a national record.
Byrom added that Matthew also collected two bronze medals in the 400 metres individual medley and the grueling 1 500 metres freestyle to underline his rich potential.
Matthew is also good at rugby and water polo.
