Three national judokas, Tatenda Guta, Lameck Chibvudere and Simba Mashayi brought honour to Zimbabwe when they won five bronze medals at the Zone Six Judo Championships, held in Maputo, Mozambique last weekend.

The one-day regional tournament saw Guta of the Rolf Valley Sport Club scooping two bronze medals in the 81kg category of the judo and kurash challenge. Kurash is a sister sport to judo, with more throwing and no ground fighting.

Chibvudere emulated his fellow countryman in the 56kg category, and national 73kg champion of Mashayi proved a force to reckon with in his new 66kg class, although Judo Association of Zimbabwe President, Pat Warren, believed he could have done more.

I believe his drop from 73kg to 66kg had a detrimental affect on his fighting. He was much taller than his 66kg opponents, putting him at a disadvantage, Warren told The Zimbabwean on Sunday.

She said the showpiece was of great value, despite the Association’s failure to send a number of fighters due to lack of funds.

The squad was a small one, being only three athletes due to financial constraints, but the tournament was of great value in assessing the continued progress of our judokas.
