The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) commemorated the 6th anniversary of the death of Batanai Hadzizi last week.
Hadzizi, a first-year student at the University of Zimbabwe, was beaten to death by riot police officers in April 2001, when drugged riot police officers descended on the campus, after students had staged a peaceful protest.
The riot police teargassed halls of residents, closed all emergency exit doors, and arrested 60 students. After realising that Hadzizi had died, police and Green Bombers took him to hospital and later said that the student had been trampled on by fellow students stampeding in battles with the police.
“We place sole responsibility for Batanai Hadzizi’s death on the police and Government of Robert Mugabe,” said ZINASU Information and Publicity Secretary Blessing Vava. “Until now his butcherers are walking Scot-free despite the gruesome murder they committed.
“We also take this opportunity to mourn our departed heroes who lost their lives in the hands of the state fighting for students’ rights: Lameck Chemvura, Christopher Giwa, Learnmore Jongwe and Garudzo Mareruswa.”
