Zims, Nigerians complain of SA xenophobia

JOHANNESBURG - The Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF) and a Nigerian senator have complained to the South African government about a rising tide of xenophobic attacks.

ZEF Executive Director Gabriel Shumba said attacks were escalating in Denneboom, Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Atteridge and some areas surrounding the capital Tshwane.

He has called for an emergency meeting with the Ministers of  State Security and Home Affairs before Freedom Day this week.

“The situation appears to be spiraling out of control with violent attacks on Zimbabweans in both Mamelodi and Soshanguve,” said Shumba. “Roadblocks were set up in those areas and  mobs of rampaging locals threatened Zimbabwean exiles.”

He added there were unconfirmed reports that two Zimbabweans died in the recent violence.

In Abuja, Senator Grace Bent complained of intimidation, brutalisation and attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Nigerian internet café owners complain of heavy-handed police raid, and said customers,  accused by policy of setting up online scams, were now afraid to use the cafes.

Hillbrow police were not available to comment. Foreign Affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa, confirmed the complaints had been received and said the government would address the issues raised. – CAJ News
