Robert Mugabe, head of the military junta now controlling Zimbabwe, told an election rally in Shamva that they had bought 600,000 tonnes of maize from South Africa to alleviate the country’s chronic food shortages.
At current prices, the 300,000-tonne consignment could cost around US$70m, before transport costs.
Transnet Freight Rail spokesman Mike Asefovitz told United Nations Information Service that the South African parastatal was definitely involved in the transport of the maize consignment. Additional resources, such as wagons and engines, were being called on to facilitate the order.
The bulk of the maize being transported was loose, Asefovitz said, although there was a small amount of maize that had been bagged. – Zimbabwe Metro
