Sierra Leone hold SA 0-0

PRETORIA - South Africa could find themselves watching the 2010 African Nations Cup at home. Bafana Bafana's woes continued on June 21 when hosts were held to a goalless draw by Sierra Leone in Atteredgiville.

The match was nothing to write home about. Following a string of disappointing results – which has seen them collect four points from a possible twelve – it appears the 2010 World Cup hosts need more than a miracle to qualify for the African Nations Cup in Angola. Thembinkosi Fanteni provided the miss of the afternoon when he shot wide with Christian at his mercy in the 21st minute while the visiting keeper blocked his and Surprise Moriri’s efforts. In the second half Bafana failed to breach the Sierra Leone defence, despite the introduction of Kathlego Mashego and Lerato Chabangu. Chabangu kicked two successive scorchers in the 66th minute drawing excellent saves out of Christian. The result is sweet news for Nigeria who has a 100 percent record after three rounds of matches.

“We definitely have to win the last games without conceding defeat. The fight is not yet over, we will just do that to win the remaining matches,” South Africa head coach, Joe Santana said.

“I made it clear upon our arrival that we will beat the hosts or draw with them for the fairest result. My boys just stuck to my instructions, and we did achieve what we wanted. I am looking forward to qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola,” Sierra Leone head coach, Mohamed Kanu said. – CAJ News
