Soldiers take over water reticulation services in Bulawayo.

BULAWAYO,—MEMBERS of the Zimbabwe National Army have taken over water reticulation services in this second largest city of the country, following a strike by city council workers over a pay dispute.

One Brigade deployed its engineering and maintenance department staff to waterworks in the city, after the intervention of Bulawayo governor Cain Mathema in the two-week long strike.

Mathema claimed that the industrial action was the work of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), which he said was keen to sabotage the government ahead of the presidential run-off election on June 27.

“This is an act of sabotage to overthrow the government. We wont allow that to happen. People should not suffer because the MDC undermines their liberties,” said the governor.

Major Tafirenyika Masuma, who is leading the army team at the waterworks, declined to answer questions from the media, referring questions to his superiors at One Brigade.

“We are only helping out, if you want more information you will have to go to One Brigade,” he said.

Bulawayo City Council acting town clerk, Joel Madubeko, also declined to comment. –CAJ News.
