State media bans all MDC advertising

HARARE - Two state-owned media organisations, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and Zimbabwe Newspapers (Ltd), have allegedly refused to air or publish advertising material for the Movement for Democratic Change's (MDC) President Morgan Tsvangirai.

Civilian head of the military junta, Robert Mugabe, faces the MDC leader in a presidential election run-off on June 27.

The Zimbabwean understands that the material submitted to Zimpapers by an advertising agency two weeks ago has still not appeared in the national daily while other material, which consisted of the party’s five priorities and excerpts from its manifesto, in English, Ndebele and Shona for all four of ZBC’s radio channels, was sent to the ZBC’s marketing department, but nothing had been aired.

The MDC said that on six occasions, twice by letter and the rest by phone, it tried to arrange for a meeting with Happison Muchechetere, the corporation’s new CEO, but all was in vain.

Muchechetere professed ignorance about the corporation’s refusal to air MDC election campaign advertisements, adding that he was working with the MDC in arranging a meeting.

Henry Muradzikwa, the former ZBC CEO, has been fired for flighting MDC adverts and not campaigning hard enough for Mugabe.
