Zambia will have free, fair poll'

MINISTER of Justice, George Kunda, has assured the nation that all efforts will be made to ensure a free and fair presidential election on October 30.

Mr Kunda said the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was doing everything possible to ensure that the election was conducted in a free and fair manner to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.

He said Government had all the confidence that the ECZ was fully in charge of the electoral process.

Mr Kunda was speaking in Lusaka yesterday shortly after he led the Attorney General Mumba Malila, Director of Public Prosecutions Chalwe Mchenga and other Ministry of Justice officials in laying wreaths on President Mwanawasa’s tomb at Embassy Park.

Dr Mwanawasa died on August 19 in Paris, France, and was buried in Lusaka on September 3.

Mr Kunda described Dr Mwanawasa as an icon who was exemplary in addressing judicial matters.

Meanwhile, some students and youths have formed a national committee to campaign for acting President Rupiah Banda in the presidential election.

National coordinator, Tobias Kafumukache, said his committee had noted with satisfaction that Mr Banda was an experienced leader who has a lot of exposure within and outside Zambia.

He said Mr Banda was capable of continuing and building upon Dr Mwanawasa’s legacy.

Mr Banda is a humble, focused, intelligent and committed leader who needs to be supported in the continuation of programmes left by the late President Mwanawasa, Mr Kafumukache said.

He urged the media to be impartial and uphold ethics in their coverage of presidential candidates.

Mr Kafumukache appealed to the Media Institute of Southern Africa and Media Ethics Council of Zambia to seriously address the infringements on the rights of individuals by some sections of the media.

The presidential election is being contested by the MMD which is fielding Mr Banda, the PF with its candidate Michael Sata and Mr Hakainde Hichilema under the United Party for National Development ticket. – ZANIS.
