NCA members remain in police custody after peaceful protests in five cities.

Following yesterday's peaceful protest actions in five cities, 29 members of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) remain in police custody. Others are currently recovering from injuries sustained at the hands of riot police.

In Harare, eight individuals are being held in Harare Central Police Station.  The police have made a statement that they will be charged with public violence.  The NCA believes that if these charges are brought, they will be completely without merit.  One of the detainees in Harare Central is suffering from serious injuries and is being denied medical attention by police authorities.

In Mutare, nine NCA members are currently in police custody after a peaceful protest in the city yesterday.  In Gweru, seven individuals are still being detained.  In Bulawayo, five NCA members remain in police custody without access to lawyers.  The detainees in these three cities have not yet been charged.

The NCA considers the continued detention of its members to be an illegal and unjustifiable response to the peaceful protests held yesterday.  The organization will not be deterred by the unwarranted use of violence and intimidation by state security agents and pledges to move forward with its campaign of peaceful demonstrations in cities across the country.

Updates will be sent as further information becomes available.
