Sitta due to inaugurate Tanzania Media Trust Fund today

Speaker of the National Assembly Samuel Sitta is expected to officiate at the launch of the Tanzania Media Fund today in Dar es Salaam, after which he will discuss with stakeholders the role of the media in promoting public accountability and good governance.

TMF is a three-year initiative which aims at strengthening
investigative and quality journalism by offering support to media
practitioners and institutions such as print and electronic media
outlets.

TMF executive manager Marjan Besuijen said the Speaker would also
discuss with participants freedom of the press and parliament-media
relationship.

Besuijen said renowned panellists Ayub Rioba, Kajubi Mukajanga, Salva
Rweyemamu, Sakina Datoo and Vicky Ntetema would debate the topic:
`Quality journalism in Tanzania: Is the core challenge government
restriction?

Media itself? Or passive public?`, adding that the debate would be facilitated by Jenerali Ulimwengu.

He said the launch would kick off with citizens airing their views on
the media in the country, to be preceded by an information session for
journalists and other potential grantees.

Besuijen said TMF saw investigative journalism as uncovering the truth
through in-depth research that would otherwise not become known, adding
that it involved careful fact-finding, checking with different sources,
analysis and good writing.

She said public-interest journalism involves quality and thorough
research on a topic that is of great importance or concern to ordinary
people, particularly those who are poor or marginalized.

The manager said TMF understood that both investigative and
public-interest journalism required journalists to ensure quality and
fairness, which needs great care and effort.

TMF`s vision was an open society, access to information, debating issues and expressing views.

The Fund sought to promote independent, diverse and vibrant media in
Tanzania by enabling investigative and public-interest journalism that
is in-depth and of importance to ordinary people.

The Tanzania Media Fund is co-financed by the Swiss Development
Cooperation (SDC), Danish embassy, The Netherlands embassy, Irish Aid
and the UK Department for International Development.

The total fund budget over the three-year period is 8.5bn/-.
