Loose-tongued Malawi government spokesperson Patricia Kaliati on Saturday, 24 January attacked the country's major bilateral donors and envoys United State of American and British in Malawi railing at their "suppor

Kaliati who is Information Minister blasted the diplomats at official launch of Malawi's street publication for the homeless Big Issue Magazine, at French cultural centre in the country's commercial city Blantyre.

We know you; we meet your vehicles in the corridors of Nyambadwe and BCA. You should know that you can't transact any business without our knowledge. We are government, said Malawi government spokesperson.

She said government has information that foreign dignitaries in Malawi are making visits to some of opposition leaders and they have since stricken deals with some of them.

Kaliati who was the guest of honor at the launch said you remove number plates of your vehicles and arrange meetings with opposition leaders. Don't you know we are the government of today?

You worked with MCP in their time, you worked with UDF in their time it's now our turn, what do you want to achieve? Do you want the opposition to come back to power? irate Kaliati said.

She made these allegations in presence of British and American Embassies representatives, and some international donors from Scotland who came to witness the launch of the magazine project which they are bankrolling.

Diplomatic sources told Nyasa Times that envoys of the EU have been meeting leaders of political parties but were not taking political sides.

"We do, however, support the principles of democracy and would want Malawi to have free, fair and credible elections so that the next government should be legitimate and continue to enjoy our support," said one diplomat in an email to Nyasa Times but opted to have his identity withheld.

Political analyst Pofela Nyekanyeka said government blast was to be taken seriously.

The government remarks coming a week after Zanu-PF of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe tied the political knot with Malawi ruling party can tell you of things to come.  Certainly, the government risks isolation. They should not be fooled that we can survive by only China's support," said Nyekanyeka.

Big Issue is an entertainment and current affairs magazine that is published weekly in some countries and monthly in others, and in Malawi, the magazine will be published monthly.

Political tension is high in Malawi as people expect to go the polls in the next four months.
