Malawi: Blantyre goes without water for days

Residents of Malawi's commercial city Blantyre have been going without water since Saturday, January 10 as Blantyre Water Board (BWB) says efforts are under way to sort out the problem.

People in Blantyre's townships especially women were seen moving up and down streets fetching water most of them from unprotected sources, a development which has raised fears of cholera outbreak.

Efforts to talk to the BWB publicity Secretary a Mr. Longwe proved futile as he was not readily available for the interview.

But in an interview with some of officials at BWB who spoke on condition of anonymity said the problem was due to heavy rainfall which has silted some pipes.

The development has raised fears of cholera outbreak as most of the areas that have been affected, have as well been hit by Cholera outbreak, which has claimed a number lives in Blantyre alone.

Currently the water board is supplying water to most affected areas in Blantyre where people are seen scrambling for the precious commodity.

Blantyre Water Board management has been under fire from cabinet including the president Ngwazi Dr Bingu Mutharika, blaming it for failure to deliver to the expectations of people.

This raised speculations that the water board was to be privatized, development which had attracted wrath of non governmental organizations. – Nyasa Times
