Kaliati: You serve a person who is paying you
Barely few days after the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) allegedly entered into an agreement with traditional leaders for the latter to campaign for the former in the runner-up to the May 19

Minister of Information and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati said in T/A Juma’s area in his Mulanje West Constituency that government has put in place measures to check the behaviour of all traditional leaders in the runner-up to the General Elections, to make sure that they work and cooperate with government of the day.

We are quite aware that some traditional leaders are bent on frustrating our efforts. They are serving the opposition. But we would like to warn all of them that as long as we are paying them every month, they should serve the government of the day, said Kaliati.

We have put in place measures to make sure that every traditional leader adheres to this. Failure to fulfil will see some of them facing very serious consequences. We are not threatening them. But you serve a person who is paying you. We should not be paying you, while you are serving others. We will not allow that, said Kaliati, whose relationship with T/A Juma, has been strained for some time now.

However, Kaliati fail short to disclose the consequences, she was refering to. The government spokewoman  said she has reports that some traditional leaders were being hired by the opposition to drum up support for them during the elections.

Few days after the DPP convention held in Blantyre, senior members of the party’s National Governing Council (NGC) met traditional leaders from various parts of the country, in which they promised of personal houses and an increase in their honaria, if they support the party in the runner-up to the elections. – Nyasa Times
