Muluzi pledges tax-exempt status to NGOs, Churches

Muluzi, who was addressing a political mass rally at Mangochi community centre ground, said under his previous administration the NGO's and registered religious groups were granted tax-exempt status and duty-free privileges on any goods they bought but bemoaned that the present government stopped the facility.

Said Muluzi: NGO's and religious groups are partners in development and to ensure they also to monitor the effectiveness of governments in meeting the needs of disempowered sections of the population, the next UDF government will allow their to buy goods on duty-free privilege.

Muluzi told the crowds which soaked to the heavy down pour that rate of VAT and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax very high saying the nation is overtaxed.

UDF presidential hopeful who claimed there is no law in the country that stops him from standing as presidential candidate for the UDF alliance and that President Bingu wa Mutharika has no powers to influence the electoral body to stop him, promised that he will establish a Tax Commission to improve the tax regime for the benefit of the tax payer.

He lamented on taxes which he said are prohibiting the progression of businesses and also moaned taxes on air time.

Muluzi retaliated his call for the government to lower fuel prices now when the tariffs are lower on the global market.

The ex-Malawi ruler also challenged government to pay arrears to teachers amounting to about K700 million.

He then used his campaign platform issues he has  pledging in his meetings  such as that the UDF government will develop the youth and enhance their potential by opening vocational colleges for life skills training noting that industrial growth is stagnant which is the main cause to high rates of unemployment.

The youth will be empowered as the next government will create youth development fund to assist the unemployed youth into entrepreneurship, he said.

Muluzi also highlighted on women- affirmative action promising that there will be a similar development fund for women and that there will be visibility of more women fork in all sectors of work.

UDF leader said their government will also be tough on fighting crime and promised to improve security facilities for police officers and deal with the root problem of crime.
