Malawi’s former President, Dr. Bakili Muluzi said on Tuesday in Salima during a whistle-stop tour on his way from Lilongwe to Blantyre, that Mutharika was using coupons for the subsidized fertilizer to buy people to join the DPP.
We have noted that more coupons have been distributed in areas where people are following the DPP. But in areas, where people are rallying behind the opposition, they have been denied the coupons, Muluzi pointed out.
This unfair distribution of resources has disadvantaged people. We ask for an end to this, otherwise innocent people are going to continue suffering due to politics, said Muluzi, in response to complaints that several people in the area were asked to join DPP in order to get coupons.
Muluzi said if Mutharika has nothing to offer people, it is immoral to coax people to rally behind the DPP through resources which are being mobilized through tax payers’ money.
I know he is desperate to remain in power. I know he is confused about his future after May 19. But we are warning him to stop using government resources to woo support. If he has achieved something, people will follow him, but he should not segregate people during distribution of resources, Muluzi said.
Last week, Traditional Authority Kawinga told Minister of Housing Development, Jafalie Mussa and Mutharika’s Senior Political Advisor, Francis Mphepo during a rally in Machinga that people were reluctant to follow DPP in the area, because for three years running, they have been denied access to coupons. – Nyasa Times
