Senior judge receives Rule of Law award: Standing ovation for Sandura

Supreme Court judge Justice Wilson Sandura has been named the first holder of the new Professor Walter Joseph Kamba Rule of Law Award.

Prominent figures from Zimbabwe's legal profession attended the presentation ceremony, organised by the Law Society of Zimbabwe.

Sandura was praised for always supporting freedom and justice and for resisting oppression.

He is absolutely committed to the rule of law and the independence of the

judiciary, said Law Society of Zimbabwe President Beatrice Mtetwa. He has been a lone voice. He stands for everything we believe in.

Sandura is the country's most experienced judge, with 26 years on the High Court and Supreme Court benches. Promotion, though, has often been denied him because of his independence and judgements that did not always find favour with the Mugabe regime.

In 2000, Mugabe appointed Godfrey Chidyausiku as Chief Justice instead of Sandura, despite Chidyausiku record of having had the highest number of judgements overturned by the Supreme Court for their defects.

Receiving his award from Harare Mayor Muchadei Masunda, Sandura paid tribute to Kamba and went on to say: I have discharged my duties in accordance with judicial laws I pledged to uphold 26 years ago to well and truly serve Zimbabwe as a judge without fear or favour. That's what I have done for the past 26 years and that's what I

intend to continue to do until I retire.

He received a standing ovation.

The award was launched to recognise the outstanding work of the late Professor Kamba, who oversaw the transformation of the University of Rhodesia into the

University of Zimbabwe (UZ).

Kamba died last May at the age of 75.
