Tanzania: Information Act under govt scrutiny

THE government through the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports has said that the process of amending the Information Act is still in progress. Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the deputy minister for Information, Culture and Sports, Mr Joel Bendera said the task involves both the government and other stakeholders including non-governmental organizations.

The deputy minister was addressing reporters on the achievements attained by his ministry for the past three years of the fourth phase government.

The political, economic and social changes have affected the laws governing the media sector in our country'' said Mr Bendera. He pointed out that the circulations of the government owned newspapers which are Daily News' and HabariLeo' as well as their weekend editions Sunday News' and HabariLeo Jumapili' has increased tremendously.

He said that his ministry had until early this year registered 94 newspapers and magazines compared to 73 newspapers and magazines in 2005, making the total amount of registered newspapers to be 657.

He added that by June 2008, there were 68 radio stations and 26 television stations registered, as well as 18 television stations. Mr Bendera called upon media owners and practitioners to abide by the ethical conducts of the discipline, to achieve the core mission of delivering information.

He further added that his ministry has established a website www.wananchi.go.tz' where people can post their annoyance, views, and arguments about the government routines and the civil service in general whereby its official inauguration is expected to commence in near future.

He attributed that the website has received about 37,963 annoyances, views, and arguments among which 20,162 have been dealt with by forwarding them to the respective institutions and ministries.

A total of 17,481 arguments were not dealt with because they were not directed straight to the government. Mr Bendera had mentioned some of the challenges that his ministry is facing as shortage of employees and low finance. – Daily News
