Zambia: Hunger looms in more districts

THE number of districts in the country in need of relief food has risen from 21 to 29, Government has revealed.

The statistics are according to a rapid food needs assessment undertaken by the disaster management and mitigation Unit (DMMU) three weeks ago.

Deputy Minister in the office of the Vice-President, Gaston Sichilima,
said in Lusaka yesterday the increase in the number of districts in
need of support has changed the relief food requirements for the period
January to March 2009 from 11,110 to 16,854 metric tonnes (MT) of maize.
